Uncertainty Levels of Second-Order Probability

چکیده

Since second-order probability distributions assign probabilities to probabilities there is uncertainty on two levels. Although different types of uncertainty have been distinguished before and corresponding measures suggested, the distinction made here between firstand second-order levels of uncertainty has not been considered before. In this paper previously existing measures are considered from the perspective of firstand second-order uncertainty and new measures are introduced. We conclude that the concepts of uncertainty and informativeness needs to be qualified if used in a second-order probability context and suggest that from a certain point of view information can not be minimized, just shifted from one level to another.

belief function and the transferable belief model

Beliefs are the result of uncertainty. Sometimes uncertainty is because of a random process and sometimes the result of lack of information. In the past, the only solution in situations of uncertainty has been the probability theory. But the past few decades, various theories of other variables and systems are put forward for the systems with no adequate and accurate information. One of these a...

Section 1. Logic and applications PROBABILISTIC REASONING ABOUT SECOND ORDER UNCERTAINTY: A LOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION

Suppose a die is being rolled. One thing is to be uncertain about the facet that will eventually show up. One quite different thing, is to be uncertain about whether the die is fair or otherwise unbiased. We can rather naturally refer to first order and second order uncertainty, respectively. In the former case we are uncertain about some (presently unknown) state of affairs. In the latter we a...

Freedom: A Measure of Second-order Uncertainty for Intervalic Probability Schemes

This paper discusses a new measure that is adaptable to certain intervalic probability frameworks, possibility theory, and belief theory. As such, it has the potential for wide use in knowledge engineering, expert systems, and related problems in the human sciences. This measure (denoted here by F) has been introduced in Smithson (1988) and is more formally discussed in Smithson (1989a). Here, ...

The known unknowns: neural representation of second-order uncertainty, and ambiguity.

Predictions provided by action-outcome probabilities entail a degree of (first-order) uncertainty. However, these probabilities themselves can be imprecise and embody second-order uncertainty. Tracking second-order uncertainty is important for optimal decision making and reinforcement learning. Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging investigations of second-order uncertainty in humans h...
